Video: Treating Trauma in Pittsburgh

For a week, Dream Doctor Nimrod Eisenberg truly became a part of the Jewish community of Pittsburgh, after flying there from Israel immediately following the attack on Tree Of Life – Or L’Simcha Congregation.

He connected to their children in such a special and meaningful way, helping them to work through their fear and reconnect to their strength.

He left a lasting impact, by training professionals all across the city in the innovative techniques that we developed here in Israel to help children and communities process trauma.

And he was warmly welcomed into homes, families, and into the hearts of everyone he met.

Thank you to our friends at Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, United Hatzalah of Israel, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, and Moose Toys for your partnership. Without you we could not have embarked on this important mission!

And we send all of our love to our new friends who welcomed Dream Doctor “Max” (aka “Nimi”) with open arms at: Jewish Family and Community Services of Pittsburgh, JCC Pittsburgh, The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh,The Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh, Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, Hillel Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh, Congregation Beth Shalom, andBeth El Synagogue.

EU and IDF Field Hospitals Complete Historic Large-Scale Exercise

Our very own Dream Doctor Nimrod Eisenberg participated in the Seism 2018 (Earthquake 2018) international exercise in Bucharest, Romania, organized by the European Union. The exercise simulated a catastrophic 7.5 magnitude earthquake affecting 130,000 people.

The Israeli team had 160 active and reserve duty soldiers and was made up of a range of medical and para-medical staff. Of the participating countries including Austria, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Moldova, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, and Norway, Israel is the only one who brought a medical clown!

As the IDF Field Hospital is ranked best in the world by the United Nations and the first ever to achieve a Type 3 rating by the World Health Organization, other countries are looking to them for leadership. This is why we are so thrilled that one of our Dream Doctors is an essential part of the largest operational exercise that has been attended so far by the IDF medical Corps and is helping to strengthen cooperation between the IDF and the European Union. It’s so amazing that the idea of including trained therapeutic medical clowns in disaster relief missions is catching on and we are honored to lead this initiative!

VIDEO: Remembering Hurricane Harvey

All of us at the Dream Doctors Project are thinking of the people affected by Hurricane Florence and sending our best wishes for a complete recovery.

And we’ve been remembering all the amazing people we met exactly one year ago, when Dream Doctors Smadar Harpak, Penny Hanuka and Yaron Sancho Goshen traveled to Texas and Florida to bring much needed relief to those suffering from stress, anxiety and depression after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Emotional support is crucial to survivors, both during and after natural disasters. In this video, Penny “Fifi” Hanuka describes the medical clowns’ special techniques for both calming and empowering young children who have been evacuated during their most difficult moment, when it’s time for everyone in the shelter to go to sleep…

Dream Doctors Meet With Hospital Director

Dr. Erez On, Director of the Baruch Padeh Medical Center in Poriya, recently held his annual meeting with the hospital’s five Dream Doctors, who presented him with their activities in departments such as treatment of victims of sexual violence, oncology, and geriatric rehabilitation.

“The presence of the clowns creates a different atmosphere in the ward, and this affects both the families of the patients and the medical staff,” said Dream Doctor Shoshi Ofir.

“In the six years that I have been here, I have seen the process of change and assimilation in which the staff learns to make use of us, and to produce more and more benefits from the presence of medical clowns,” said Dream Doctor Shirley Goldstein

Dream Doctor Charlie Sofair told us about the important activities of the medical clowns in the meetings and treatment of the sick children who came from Syria as part of the “Good Neighbors” project. “We clowns can calm feelings of fear and anxiety and bring smiles to the Syrian children who suffered so much in recent years, for us language is not a barrier … ”

Dr. On concluded, “You are doing a blessed and important job and it is clear to us that it has a central place as part of the treatment and part of the healing process. Not only in connection with children, the medical clowns also contribute greatly to the process of caring for adult and geriatric patients. They help the patient mobilize the mental powers that will enable him to cope with the disease, reduce the level of fear, tension and feelings of loss of control and uncertainty.”

Dream Doctors Founder Honored

The Dream Doctors Project is incredibly proud of our founder, Yaacov Shriqui, one of this year’s recipients of the “Presidential Volunteer Medal”, which was presented by Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin. The moving ceremony also featured a performance by Dream Doctors Hagar Hofesh and Nadav Yalon who prepared a song just for this very special occasion.

We wish Yaacov many more years of success in achieving his dreams and helping make our country a better place for all who live here! Watch the short highlights video (in Hebrew) here!

“Doctors on the Bar”

As part of the staff at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, Dream Doctors Anat Zonnenfeld and Noam Inbar give lectures to the public on the “impact of humor on health” and on their work as medical clowns. They speak to various populations in the area, such as children, teens, senior citizens and religious groups.

In addition, this is the third year that they were part of the hospital’s “Medicine on the Bar” project, in which they joined a team of 30 different experts who lectured on their professional fields in a variety of places throughout the city, such as cafes, restaurants and pubs.

We congratulate Anat and Noam for giving a sold-out lecture as part of this exciting initiative!
